U17 European Championship has started. 24 matches were played in total on reconstructed and newly built sand courts at the Jarun Lake.
In the men’s event, current European champions, team Spain beat team Switzerland in their first match at the EURO. Also, Spanish players won their second game against Ukraine with 2: 1 in sets.
European crown defenders in the women’s event, the Dutch team won the first points against Ukraine. Amber Van der Meij was very satisfied: „It was a very good game and exciting in the end. We won and that is the most important for us because we want to win EURO again“. In the second match, the Netherlands was better than Romania with 2:0.
One of the favorites for winning medals, team Croatia was 100% effective after the first day of the Championship. They beat Russia and Italy. Captain of Croatian men’s team Krešimir Obratov said: „We had more luck today and won both games in shoot out. Our team is first ranked in the group and it’s the most important for us. We have the fighting spirit and let’s go to the first place!“.
The Croatian women’s junior team lost two matches against Russia and Lithuania, but girls are optimistic: „We have three games left on the EURO and I think that we can win and pass the group“, Patricija Hren said.
